Graduate school “Land Resources and Their Sustainable Utilisation” invites PhD students and all interests to visit Dr Gerd Michelsen seminars.

Lector: Professor Gerd Michelsen is senior professor for sustainability science (2014-), being also holder (2005-) of the UNESCO Chair in Higher Education for Sustainable Development at Leuphana University Lüneburg (Germany) and now in 2019 also guest-professor at Environmental Science Department,
Faculty of Geography and Earth Sciences, University of Latvia. He studied economics in Freiburg (Germany), has a doctoral degree in economics and the ‘venia legendi’ in adult education. From 1995 to 2013 he was a professor for ecology, sustainability and environmental communication, as well as developing and directing the Institute for Sustainability and Environmental Communication at Leuphana University Lüneburg, where he was also Vice-President for Education, Teaching and Training (2004-2006). He received the B.A.U.M. Scientific Award in 1998. His fields of research and publications are in (higher) education for sustainable development, sustainability and environmental communication, sustainable consumption.

Sustainability Science: why and for what?
The lecture deals with the question of what characterizes sustainability research in the context of science. Backgrounds such as the special role of science in the horizon of sustainability are discussed, whereby aspects such as disciplinarity, inter- and transdisciplinarity play a role. Socially oriented research, research as a learning process and context dependency of research are explained as central elements of sustainability research. Finally, the question of the opportunities and limits of sustainability research is addressed. In small groups, open questions will be discussed and a task will be worked on.

Inter- and Transdisciplinarity in Research
This lecture focuses on questions concerning the process of sustainability research. In particular, project organization, knowledge generation, methodological aspects such as the integration of different knowledge bases are discussed. Furthermore, different approaches and understandings of transdisciplinarity are presented. The process of transdisciplinary research in its different phases will be made more concrete by means of the associated key questions and an example. Finally, open questions will be discussed in small groups, experiences will be exchanged and exercises will be worked on.

Doctoral Seminar “Doctoral training for starters: research and management tools for a better PhD” (November 7 – December 19, 2019)

The condensed seminar targets PhD scholars in Geography in their initial stage and addresses key issues occurring throughout the whole phase of managing a PhD. Completing a doctoral project is seen as a recursive process with constant challenges to be overcome as recurring events.

The series of four sessions is designed with the aim to lead participants to more clarity regarding their own project. Further, the seminar will provide some basics to better understand the general challenges of doing a PhD and to cope with the process of setting research ideas into practice. The seminar will bridge elements of discursive action, small group discussions, regular participant inputs with classic lecture elements. There will also be space to go into detail with respect to individual challenges.

Doktorantūras skola “Zemes resursi un to ilgtspējīga izmantošana” 2019. gada 18. oktobrī un 7. novembrī LU Dabas mājā aicina doktorantus, jaunos zinātniekus un interesentus apmeklēt Lietuvas Dabaszinātņu centra prof. Zenonan Gulbinas semināru “Kā sagatavot sekmīgu starptautiska projekta pieteikumu”.

Semināra ietvaros paredzēts aplūkot vispirms dzīvās dabas zinātnēs būtiskas projektu grupas (LIFE programme, BSR programme, INTERREG programme, Norwegian funds). Semināra ietvaros tiks aplūkoti projektu noteikumi, pieteikumu formu aizpildīšana, izpildes prakse, bet semināra otrajā dienā tiks izvērtēta labākā prakse – kā būt sekmīgam.

Seminārs “Biofilosofija par dzīvību” notiks 2018. gada 12. decembrī, 16:15-18:30, Aspazijas bulvārī 5, 510. telpā.

Biofilosofijas mērķis ir pievērst uzmanību cilvēka eksistences dabiskajiem, ķermeniskajiem un bioloģiskajiem aspektiem, vienlaicīgi apzinoties to sociālo, kultūrvēsturisko, valodisko dabu. Kā domāt par cilvēku kā bioloģisku, ķermenisku būtni, bet nereducējot šo domu uz kādu bioloģisko determinismu vai noliedzot bioloģisko un dabisko kā nebūtiskas sociālas konkstrukcijas? Kā domāt par dzīvību, ķermeni, dabu humanitāro zinātņu ietvaros? Šoreiz pievēršamies dzīvības tēmai. Nevis tādēļ, lai to izskaidrotu, bet mēģinātu saprast.

RAIVIS BIČEVSKIS – BIOFILOZOFIJA UN BIOUTOPIJA: NĀKAMAIS CILVĒKS – POSTEKOLOĢIJA – BIOKAPITĀLISMS – VĒSTURES (NE)GALS
Lai cik plašs vai šaurs būtu “biofilozofijas” jautājumu loks – no dzīvības zinātņu konceptu analīzes, bioētikas un ekoloģiskās problemātikas līdz antropoloģijai, biopolitikai un sociāli konstruētu priekšstatu par dzīvību hermeneitikai –, ikviens biofilozofijas jautājums ir kultūrkritiski angažēts. Šī angažētība ir saistīta ar noteiktu nākotnes prognostiku, kā arī ar to utopiju kritiku, kuras saista savus mērķus ar dažādām dzīvības izpratnēm un dzīvības transformācijām. Biofilozofijas jautājumu loks skar ne tikai pagātni vai tagadni, bet meandriski ietiecas nākotnē.

REINIS VILCIŅŠ – BIOLOĢISKAIS PAVĒRSIENS VALODAS FILOZOFIJĀ
Referātā aplūkots, kādā ziņā valodas filozofijas ietvaros nozīmīga ir bioloģisko nosacījumu uzsvēršana mēģinājumos filozofiski tvert valodas dabu un kādas filozofiskas konsekvences ir mēģinājumiem par valodu domāt nevis kā par galvenokārt zīmju sistēmu, bet gan drīzāk bioloģiskam organismam(-iem) raksturīgu īpašību vai prasmju kopumu.

TOMS STEPIŅŠ – BIOSEMIOTIKA: DZĪVĪBA UN INFORMĀCIJA
Modernās tendences biosemiotikas jomā piedāvā skaidrot semiozi ‒ jeb, plašāk, komunikāciju ‒ ne tikai kā būtisku dzīvo būtņu funkciju (kā to, ko dzīvība dara), bet, analizējot semiotiskus procesus informācijas jēdzienos, aicina saprast tieši informāciju kā dzīvības fundamentālo iedabu (kā to, kas dzīvība ir).
Referātā tiek aplūkota ideja par dzīvības un informācijas ciešo sasaisti, sākot no tās iedvesmas avota baltvācu teorētiskā biologa Jakoba fon Ikskila darbos, caur tās transformācijām Gregorija Beitsona kibernētikā, līdz pat tās modernajām variācijām biosemiotiķu Jespera Hofmeijera, Klausa Emeša un Terensa Dīkona uzskatos, vienlaikus paturot prātā informācijas tehnoloģiju straujās attīstības konteksu.

IGORS GUBENKO – PĀRSNIEGT DZĪVĪBU
Priekšlasījumā tiks iztirzāta tehnoloģiskās transcendences ideja, kas pauž cilvēka iespēju ar tehnoloģiskiem līdzekļiem pārsniegt bioloģijas uzliktos ierobežojumus. Izsekojot transcendences jēdziena metamorfozēm Rietumu intelektuālajā vēsturē, es analizēšu transhumānistu loloto sapni par cilvēka atbrīvošanos no bioloģiskās dzīvības spaidiem tā dēvētās tehnoloģiskās singularitātes iestāšanās rezultātā.

ARTIS SVECE – DZĪVNIEKA DZĪVĪBA POSTHUMĀNISMĀ
Dzīvnieka dzīvīgums piesaista uzmanību un noteikti ir viens no iemesliem, kāpēc dzīvnieku ētiskais statuss tiek uzskatīts vismaz par problēmu. Vienlaicīgi dzīvnieku aizstāvības teorijās dzīvība nav centrālā kategorija, un dzīvības svētuma ideja tiek atzīta par neiespējamu. Tomēr posthumānistu diskusijās vēlme atbrīvoties no slēpta antropocentrisma, tai skaitā arī dzīvnieku aizstāvības teorijās, liek no jauna pievērsties dzīvnieku dzīvības tēmai.
